Lower Back Pain in Metairie — What Actually Works (and What Just Masks It)

Woman with back pain

If you live in Metairie and your lower back pain has been talking to you lately, you're in good company.

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss work, skip workouts, and stop doing the things they love — and most people wait far too long to do anything about it.

At Louisiana Chiropractic Center, lower back pain is the single most common thing we treat for our cash and insurance patients. Here's the honest version of what's usually going on, what actually helps, and when it's time to get checked.

Why Your Lower Back Hurts (It's Usually Not One Big Thing)

Most lower back pain doesn't come from a single dramatic injury. It builds. A few of the usual suspects we see in Metairie patients:

Sitting — a lot. Desk jobs, long commutes on Veterans or I-10, evenings on the couch. Sitting loads your lumbar spine in a flexed position for hours, tightens your hip flexors, and weakens the muscles that are supposed to support your spine.

Lifting with your back instead of your hips. Yard work, hauling groceries, picking up kids or grandkids. One awkward twist while lifting is the classic "I just bent over, and it went out" story.

Old injuries that never fully healed. That fender bender three years ago. The high school football years. Your body compensates, and the compensation eventually costs you.

Weak core and tight hips. Your spine is only as supported as the muscles around it. When they're not doing their job, your joints and discs pick up the slack.

What "Just Living With It" Actually Costs

Here's what we see when people tough it out for months: the pain doesn't stay put. Your body shifts how you stand, walk, and sleep to avoid it. Then the other hip starts hurting. Then the mid-back. Then you're sleeping badly, which makes everything hurt more.

Pain medication has a place, but it treats the alarm, not the fire. If the joint restriction or muscle dysfunction underneath doesn't change, the pain comes back when the pills wear off.

What Actually Works

There's no magic single fix, but there is a proven combination — and it's what we do at LCC every day:

Chiropractic adjustments. When the joints of your lumbar spine and pelvis aren't moving the way they should, adjustments restore that motion. Better joint motion means less protective muscle spasm and less irritation of the nerves around the joint.

Soft tissue therapy. Tight, knotted muscles don't release just because the joint moves better. We work the muscles, tendons, and connective tissue directly — this is where a lot of the "wow, I can move again" comes from.

Massage therapy, in-house. We have massage therapy right in our office because it works hand-in-glove with adjustments. Looser muscle lets the adjustment hold longer.

Movement you can actually do. We'll show you a small number of specific exercises and habit changes — how to sit, how to lift, how to sleep — that keep the improvement you make in the office.

When to Get Checked (Sooner Than You Think)

Come in if any of these sound familiar: pain that's lasted more than a week or two, pain that keeps coming back in the same spot, pain that shoots into your hip or leg, stiffness that makes the first hour of the morning miserable, or back pain that's changing how you move.

And if you're having numbness in the groin, loss of bladder or bowel control, or leg weakness that's getting worse — that's not a chiropractic visit, that's an emergency room visit. Go now.

What Your First Visit at LCC Looks Like

No mystery, no pressure. Dr. Patrick Ford will sit down with you, listen to your story, examine your spine and how you move, and tell you plainly what he finds — and whether chiropractic care is the right fit. If it's not, he'll tell you that too and point you in the right direction. That's how a neighborhood practice keeps its neighbors for decades.

Most patients are surprised how simple it is to get started. Call 504-828-5285 or stop by our Metairie office. Your back has been patient with you. Time to return the favor.
